Chapter 1

Chapter One Dumped and married. I was already at the court where David and I would be getting married. It has been an hour and I haven't seen any sign of David yet. I wondered what must have been holding him back as I picked up my phone to call him. He didn't pick up after calling him several times. My whole body trembled with intense worry. Where did he keep his phone? Where was he at the moment? A thousand and one thoughts continue to run through my mind. I tried my best to remain composed although I was already losing my temper. The magistrate was already asking me to come in with my partner who is nowhere to be found when my phone rang. I sighed with relief ready to give David a piece of my mind for doing this to me. Today of all days. Our special day. The word he spoke next shattered my heart into a million pieces. “Diana…I can't be with you anymore…I have found someone else who I really love”, “Go home, I will come and meet you later”, he voiced out with little or no concern in his voice. I rolled my eyes in disbelief, very sure David was playing a prank on me and I wasn't in the mood to play. “Be fast..or we are going to be replaced”, I responded ignoring the word he spoke to me. “I am serious Diana..I am about to board a flight to Dubai..I am starting a new life there with Ophelia”, he added. “What do you mean by that?”I asked oblivious of the fact that I have been arguing in the courtyard for over ten minutes now. Today was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. David was supposed to meet me up at ten-thirty to have our wedding. “David…it's getting late please come”, my voice pleading. “Diana…it seemed like you don’t understand what I just said, I…I am not coming”, David said. I felt tears streamed down my eyes uncontrollably ruining the makeup in my eyes. “I…I don't think I love you so much to want to get married to you and live in the same house with you”, my heart sank. I have been suspecting David to be cheating on me but the love I had for him was so strong that I pretended and when he asked to marry him I couldn't deny the joy I felt to finally be chosen by him. “David…I love you so much…we can make this work just come let's get married… please…I am waiting for you”, I begged. He ended the call without giving me a warning leaving me wallowing in self-pity. He knew my dream of getting married and still chose to shatter them into pieces. I didn't know which hurt the most. David left me to be with another woman who happened to be my best friend. Foolish me!..I thought we were building a future together. What I didn't know was that David was pretending all along and stabbing me behind my back. I tightened my fists into a fury as I picked up my phone to call my bank manager to freeze our joint account. “I am so sorry Miss Diana..he has withdrew every single penny from the account”, My head is spinning round, and round. I wanted someone to wake me up from this bad dream I didn't sign up for. I dialed his number again and realised it wasn't going through again. David had blocked my line. I squatted right there in the courtyard. I didn't care if people were watching me. I just had my heart yanked out and broke into several tiny pieces. I cried my eyes out and couldn't help but overhear a conversation of a man that was standing less than a foot away from me. “Where is she?..I can't find any one here”, he voiced out “Sorry sir..let me get in contact with you here”, his assistant voiced out. “I don't have the whole day…I need the lady so I can get this over with”, he yelled. “I won't be here if my grandfather hasn't insisted that I get married or else he won't let me have company”, he cursed. “I am sorry sir”, someone spoke from the other end of the line. He sighed deeply, muttering a few inaudible words to himself. “I knew grandfather wanted to make sure the company was in safe hands before leaving this world but this disappointment wasn't what I signed up for”, I guess in a bid to make him proud he had gone through an agency and hired a random lady who was to get married to him. I sat down without saying anything. She was nowhere to be found after collecting part-payment “I thought you said she would be here on time”, he shouted at his assistant once more, getting impatient already. “I am sorry sir, let me try and reach her again”, Brian said, cutting off the call. “What a waste of my time”, he sighed out loud and annoyed. The phone rang again. He picked it up. “Her company is unable to get a hold of her”, his assistant responded. “She is currently unreachable, why don't you come back let's reschedule with the company they will send us someone else”, “I am not going to leave this place without a marriage certificate”, He replied. He was not intentionally putting pressure on his assistant. He just needed the result immediately. I stood up from where I was seated and was about to fall when the most handsome man I have ever seen in my life caught me in his arms. “Be careful and watch where you are going young lady”, he said, pulling me away. “I am sorry”, I whispered My name was called again and since I didn't have any reason to be here. I straightened myself properly and mustered the little courage in me. “I will marry you”, I said. “What?” I looked at him and saw that he was totally shocked to hear it from me. I barely knew this man and here I was agreeing to a marriage with him. “You need a wife don't you”, I asked again. “Yes I do” he replied and I could see that he felt that I was the answer to his long time prayers. “I was dumped on my wedding day and overheard you talking of how you need a wife”, I replied not wanting to bore him with too many questions. “Let's get married then”, he replied. “I am desperate in need of a wife and I don't want to be picky”, I excused myself as I found the nearest restroom and went in to quickly clean my make-up which had been destroyed. I have no tools to re-touch so wiping it off was the best thing for me to do. I returned to find him still standing, looking strikingly handsome in his perfectly tailored suit. My stomach fluttered with relief that I wasn't going to be marrying an eyesore. I couldn't deny the fact that he was such an extremely handsome and gorgeous man especially with his eagle-like piercing eyes. In fact I could tell he was far better-looking and richer than my ex. David. I followed him as we both sat down facing the judge. Who didn't waste time as the marriage ceremony began. The two witnesses stood behind us as the Judge was prepared to join us together. The process was shorter than expected and soon I was legally married to a stranger. “I now pronounce husband and wife”, he exclaimed. I blinked multiple times. I could not believe that I just got married. Under normal circumstances I was supposed to give my husband a big kiss on his lips. Looking beside me at the stranger I couldn't believe he was now my husband.

I returned to New York for my welcome-home party, expecting a warm embrace from Edwin, my devoted fiancé of twenty years. Instead, his first words to me were a cold, public warning to stay away from his new girlfriend, Kacy. He stood in my family's hotel, shielding a girl I had never even met, and painted me as a vicious, jealous bully. "She is very sensitive, Kaitlyn. Her background is tough. Please, be gentle with her. Don't upset her." He humiliated me in front of our entire elite circle, allowing them to mock me as the aggressive, discarded ex while he carried her away like a fragile princess. For twenty years, I had been his loyal shadow, fixing his mistakes and loving him unconditionally. I couldn't understand how decades of deep devotion could be instantly erased by a few crocodile tears and a manipulative damsel act. He was absolutely certain I would throw a tantrum, cry, and eventually crawl back to beg for his attention. But he was wrong. He didn't know that Everett Rowe, a billionaire tech mogul, had been patiently waiting five years to marry me. He also didn't know that during my three years abroad, I wasn't just studying art—I became "K.B.", the ruthless Wall Street predator who could swallow his family's empire whole. I calmly pulled out my phone, ignored the mocking whispers around me, and typed a single message to Everett. "Yes. I'll marry you."

For three years, I endured being treated like a walking ATM and a maid by my husband's family, biting my tongue to keep the peace. Then, my husband's buddy suddenly dropped off a nine-year-old boy at my front door. The crumpled note from my husband casually explained it was his illegitimate son, blaming me for being barren and demanding I raise the kid as our own. My mother-in-law was absolutely thrilled, parading the boy around as the true heir at the dinner table. "Some trees just don't bear fruit, no matter how much water you give them," she sneered. My brother-in-law cheered, and my drunk father-in-law demanded I cook a feast to celebrate. They actually expected me to continue paying the mortgage, buying the groceries, and cleaning up their endless messes, all while raising the living proof of my husband's betrayal. I looked at the parasites who had drained me dry for years, acting like they were doing me a favor by letting me stay in a house that my money paid for. I didn't scream, and I didn't cry. I simply called my lawyer to file for an immediate divorce, froze every single bank account and credit card they relied on, and drove off to my grandmother's secluded cabin in the woods. Let them see how long they survive without my money.

Averie spent hours preparing a perfect third-anniversary dinner for her billionaire husband, Jarett Sharp. Instead of celebrating, she received an anonymous photo of him intimately holding another woman. When Jarett finally arrived, he didn't even look guilty. "Candida. It's okay. Don't be scared. I'm on my way." He simply took a call from his mistress, shoved Averie aside, and walked right back out the door. That same night, Averie's father suffered a massive heart attack. The hospital demanded a half-million-dollar deposit before they would operate. But when Averie frantically tried to use the emergency medical trust card Jarett had given her, it was declined. Jarett had deliberately frozen her access to the funds just hours earlier. While she begged his assistant on the phone, Jarett refused to be disturbed, busy wrapping his expensive coat around his mistress in the hospital garden. Averie collapsed in the hallway, realizing the man she loved was deliberately letting her father die. In the end, a childhood friend stepped in to pay the bill and save her father's life, while her billionaire husband later pinned her to their bed, throwing a check at her and reminding her he had bought her for three million dollars. Averie didn't shed a single tear. She slowly ripped his check into pieces, left her massive diamond ring on the dresser, and walked out into the cold New York night with nothing but her old suitcase. She pulled out her phone and dialed her old ballet professor. She wasn't just going to leave Jarett Sharp. She was going to destroy him.

My chest tightened with anticipation, five years of shared struggle culminating in this moment at the Manhattan penthouse banquet. But Chace, my partner, didn't look at me; he turned to Karyn, sliding his family's heirloom emerald ring onto her finger. Then, his voice echoed through the hall, dismissing me as "nothing but an asset under my name to provide entertainment." My smile froze, the room erupted in laughter, and a cruel kick sent me sprawling, spraining my ankle on the cold marble floor. Karyn mocked me, but it was Chace’s icy gaze that truly shattered me. He dismissed our past, threatening my mother’s grave and my father’s life if I didn't "stay in your place and be an obedient dog." The man I bled for, starved for, fought for, was a complete stranger, a monster veiled in cold disdain. My heartbreak bled out, replaced by a reckless, destructive madness. This wasn't just humiliation; it was an execution. Retreating to the lavish restroom, my mind sharpened. I unblocked a forbidden number, a name whispered with terror in the New York underground: Keith Mosley. My text was brief: "I am ready to pay my debt." His reply flashed, stark and dominant: "The price is marriage." This wasn't a price; it was my knife.
