Falling from Grace. Chapter 1

"Sister, you've finally woken."

Having fainted from shock, I opened my eyes on the hospital bed to find Sophia's pitifully innocent face staring back at me.

She seemed utterly hypocritical to me then. Fighting the urge to slap her, I snapped, "You have the nerve to call me sister?!"

"Sister, I'm sorry for what I did, but I truly love Brother Ross. I need him more than you do."

Sophia spoke the most nauseating words in the softest tone, "Sister Rory, we truly love each other."

If they truly loved each other.

What am I then?

What about the daughter I bore him with such struggle?

The thought made my eyes redden as I glared fiercely at Sophia. "You need Ross more than me? What about my daughter, barely three years old? What about me?!"

"I can be Jessica's stepmother. You're still young, Sister. You can find someone who loves you and have another child."

With that, Sophia dropped to her knees with a thud.

But as a mother, hearing such words made my blood boil. I lashed out, slapping her across the face.

Whether it was calculated or not,

the next instant,

the ward door swung open.

Ross entered, hearing the commotion. He helped Sophia up from the floor, then fixed me with a gaze as though I were his mortal enemy.

"Have you lost your mind?"

Gazing at the man I'd poured every ounce of my being into loving, tears betrayed me, streaming down my cheeks.

"Ross! Of course I've lost my mind! My husband's sleeping with my sister – how could I not be mad?"

I screamed like a shrew.

I leapt off the hospital bed, grabbed Sophia's arm, and demanded why he'd seduced my husband. "You shameless creature! How dare you call yourself Dad's daughter? How could you do this to him?!"

"Enough!"

Ross roared.

He clutched Sophia tightly to his chest and shoved me violently to the floor, my back crashing into the table.

The searing pain left me immobilised.

Lying on the cold floor, I reached out to grab Ross's trouser leg. "Save me, Ross. Save me, please."

Ross's brow furrowed slightly. He instinctively reached to help me up, but Sophia gasped sharply.

"Ouch!"

Ross instantly withdrew his hand, his tone of concern for Sophia unlike anything I'd ever heard from him.

"Still hurting? I'll take you to see a doctor."

This scene stabbed deep into my heart. A sharp cramp seized my lower abdomen, and I couldn't spare a thought for my anger towards them.

"Save me..."

"Ross, hurry up and call a doctor..."

I cried out to Ross incessantly.

Yet his eyes were fixed only on Sophia. My voice grew fainter and fainter until I saw him carry her away.

Overwhelmed by grief and fury,

a warm flow surged between my legs.

The floor stained crimson with blood.

"Ross... save me... I'm pregnant..."

As I slipped into unconsciousness, I dreamt.

I dreamt of my university days.

I was the undisputed campus beauty,

while Ross was the most sought-after heartthrob.

I fell for Ross at first sight. With the help of our mutual friends, we finally became a couple.

It was my first love.

I didn't know how to love someone.

I only knew to give him my very best.

My connections, my resources, even my savings.

To support his business venture.

I gave him everything I possessed.

"Rory, trust me. I'll give you a warm home and make you the happiest person in the world."

Those words still echo in my ears.

Yet,

he turned me into the most ridiculous woman

in the entire world.

A blinding light forced my eyes open, revealing I was back in the hospital ward.

"The baby... my baby..."

I bolted upright in the bed, seeing a room full of people, their faces heavy with sorrow and regret.

Father told me the baby was gone.

My in-laws urged me not to grieve too deeply.

My stepmother asked me not to blame Sophia.

As for Ross,

he hadn't even come to see me.

"Dad, I lost my baby because of Sophia and Ross! They ruined my child!"

I cried, clutching my father's hand,

hoping he would see justice done for me.

"Rory, neither Sophia nor Ross could have meant it. They're the people closest to you."

I wondered if I'd misheard.

"Dad... Ross cheated! How could Sophia seduce my husband? How could they be so disgusting!"

My stepmother wore immaculate makeup, showing not a trace of remorse. "Rory, have you forgotten? Ross never wanted to marry you in the first place. You forced him into it."

My mother-in-law, who had never liked me, chimed in from the side, "You've brought shame upon our entire family."

I trembled with rage,

yet found no words to counter them.

It was true Ross hadn't wanted to marry me. Only after I'd become pregnant with Jessica had he reluctantly agreed to wed me.

But could I be blamed for that?

If he didn't want to marry me, why had he touched me?

Why had he exploited my connections and resources, climbing step by step from a lowly clerk to become the billionaire CEO he was now?

"Get out! All of you, get out!"

At my furious shout, my in-laws and father assumed I was too enraged to reason with, and reluctantly left the hospital room.

I lay alone in the hospital bed.

Weeping until my tears ran dry.

Clinging to the last shred of hope.

I dialled Ross's number. Before I could ask where he was, an unbearable sound reached my ears.

"Ross big brother~"

"Do you like my new knickers?"

I molded myself into perfection for him, wearing the colors he liked and suppressing my own voice. Until I walked past his study and saw him with Lyra-the orphan he called his "sister." His hand rested intimately on her thigh as he laughed, telling her, "Elara is just a political necessity. You are the moon in my sky." My heart shattered, but the physical blow came days later. During a training exercise, the safety cable snapped. I fell twenty feet, shattering my leg. Lying in the dirt, gasping through the pain, I watched my Fated Mate run. Not to me. He ran to Lyra, who was burying her face in his chest, feigning terror. He comforted her while I bled. Later, in the infirmary, I heard him whisper to her, "She won't die. It will just teach her who the real Luna is." He knew. He knew she had sabotaged the rope with silver, and he was protecting her attempted murder. The final thread of my love incinerated into ash. The next morning, I walked into the Council Hall, threw a thick file on the table, and looked the Elders in the eye. "I am dissolving the engagement," I stated coldly. "And I am withdrawing my family's silver supply. I will starve this Pack until you beg." Kael laughed, thinking I was bluffing. He didn't notice the lethal Beta from the rival pack standing in the shadows behind me, ready to help me burn Kael's kingdom to the ground.
The Last Ledger Novel Cover

The Last Ledger ‎ ‎Kira Bennett had spent her entire life in the quiet margins. A meticulous, introverted accountant, she preferred the certainty of numbers over the unpredictable tangle of human emotions. Her days were predictable, her nights uneventful, and her world small by design. Until one ordinary evening-one misplaced flash drive-shattered the safety she thought would last forever. ‎ ‎It arrived by mistake, slipped into her files as casually as a memo. But the contents were anything but ordinary. Inside that unassuming drive lay the kind of evidence that could topple an empire-financial trails of corruption, coded transactions, offshore accounts, and the darkest revelation of all: murder. Kira understood numbers better than anyone. But these numbers told a story of greed, blood, and betrayal on a scale she'd never imagined. ‎ ‎Before she could make sense of what she'd uncovered, the threat came knocking. A silent team-merciless, efficient, and trained to erase problems-was dispatched to eliminate her. Kira had always believed preparation and order could protect her from chaos. But rules and caution meant nothing when hunted by ghosts who moved with lethal precision. ‎ ‎Then came Donovan Hale. ‎ ‎Handsome, reckless, and infuriatingly charismatic, Donovan was the last person she expected to crash into her life-and the only person capable of keeping her alive. As the estranged son of the corporation whose secrets the flash drive threatened to expose, Donovan had spent years rejecting his father's empire. He carried his own battle scars, his own buried fury at the rot beneath the polished corporate surface. Bringing the empire down wasn't just rebellion-it was justice. And Kira's accidental discovery was the weapon he'd been waiting for. ‎ ‎Their partnership formed out of necessity, but it was far from seamless. Kira, methodical and cautious, struggled to keep pace with Donovan's impulsive, risk-driven strategies. Donovan, who thrived in chaos, found himself both amused and frustrated by her rigid logic and quiet determination. Yet beneath their clashing styles, an unexpected respect began to grow-a recognition of strength in each other neither had anticipated. ‎ ‎Danger pushed them closer. Every narrow escape, every tense hideout, every shared secret deepened a connection neither of them was ready for. Attraction simmered between them-sharp, undeniable, and every bit as dangerous as the mercenaries chasing them. Kira had never imagined desire could feel like a second heartbeat; Donovan had never imagined he could care for someone who didn't come wrapped in adrenaline and trouble. But love thrives in the shadows where fear and trust collide. And for the first time, they both found something worth fighting for beyond survival. ‎ ‎As they raced through underground networks, abandoned warehouses, and the hidden corners of a city built on deceit, the truth behind the crime ring grew clearer-and more terrifying. The empire's reach was long. Its enforcers were merciless. Allies turned into liabilities. Safe houses became traps. Every step closer to justice carried a heavier cost, and every choice demanded sacrifice. ‎ ‎For Kira, the transformation was profound. The woman who once sought safety in routine discovered a resilience forged in fire. For Donovan, the battle became personal in ways he'd never expected, as protecting Kira forced him to confront the ghosts of his family's legacy-and the man he wanted to become. ‎ ‎Their enemies closed in with suffocating precision, determined to silence them before the truth could surface. But Kira and Donovan were no longer running-they were fighting back. Armed with the damning evidence on the drive, a strategic mind sharpened by terror, and a partnership burning with equal parts adrenaline and longing, they pushed toward the heart of the conspiracy. ‎ ‎The Last Ledger is a gripping fusion of suspense, danger, and electrifying romance. It follows two unlikely allies thrust into extraordinary circumstances-one seeking escape from chaos, the other born from it. Their journey weaves through betrayal, hidden agendas, and high-stakes confrontations, all while exploring the fierce, fragile bond that grows between them. ‎ ‎In the end, their mission is not just to expose corruption but to survive long enough to see justice delivered. And along the way, they discover that the most powerful force in a world built on lies isn't money, secrecy, or control. ‎ ‎It's the unexpected bond between a woman who never wanted the spotlight ‎and a man who'd spent his life running from it. ‎ ‎Together, they are dangerous. ‎Together, they are unstoppable. ‎Together, they are the last hope to bring an empire to its knees. ‎
