Chapter 2

‎Clara stepped out of the elevator with steady confidence, her heels clicking softly against the polished marble floor of Rothwell Tower. The building hummed quietly around her, security systems, distant conversations and the faint aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifted through the corridor as she adjusted the sleeve of her tailored suit.‎

‎She had prepared carefully for this moment. The blueprints of the building were memorized. The security layout had been studied down to the smallest detail. Even her arrival had been timed precisely so that she would enter the boardroom at exactly the right moment.

‎‎To anyone watching, she looked like someone who belonged there, someone familiar with the power and wealth that filled the tower. The truth, however, was far more complicated.

‎‎Inside the boardroom, the conversation was already in progress. Executives sat around the long table, their voices low and controlled as they discussed the future of Rothwell Enterprises.

‎‎‎Jeffery Rothwell sat near the head of the table, his posture relaxed but his attention sharp.

‎‎The door opened quietly. Every conversation in the room faltered. Heads turned as Clara stepped inside, her calm presence immediately drawing the attention of every person seated there. The room fell silent except for the faint sound of her heels crossing the floor.

‎‎Jeffery's eyes lifted.

‎‎He stood as Clara approached, his movements smooth and deliberate. When she reached his side, she offered the room a gentle, composed smile.

‎‎"Ladies and gentlemen," Jeffery said calmly, his voice carrying easily across the room. "Allow me to introduce my fiancee."‎

‎The reaction was immediate. Gasps rippled around the table as several directors exchanged stunned looks. Papers rustled, chairs shifted, and whispers quickly filled the air.‎

‎Clara remained perfectly still beside Jeffery, her smile polite and controlled. She had expected this.

‎‎The chairman leaned forward slowly, studying her with open skepticism.

‎‎"You expect us to believe this engagement is real?" he asked.

‎‎Clara turned toward him with effortless grace. Her expression remained warm, though there was something strategic hidden behind it.

‎"My name is Clara," she said smoothly. "I apologize for arriving late. The arrangements required a certain level of discretion."

‎The explanation did little to calm the room.

‎‎Across the table, several directors continued whispering to one another. A few looked toward Jeffery as if waiting for confirmation that this was not some elaborate joke but Jeffery said nothing.

‎Instead, he watched the reactions carefully.

‎‎His gaze eventually settled on Malcolm, his uncle who sat perfectly still, his expression unreadable. While others reacted with shock, Malcolm simply observed the situation.

‎‎Within minutes the necessary documents were brought forward and examined. The engagement agreement was verified, signatures checked, and legal confirmations quietly made.

‎‎Slowly, the tension in the room began to settle. The chairman leaned back in his chair with a long breath.

‎"Well," he said reluctantly, "it appears the documents are legitimate."

‎‎Clara picked up her clutch bag from the table.‎

‎"The contract begins now," she said calmly.

‎‎Jeffery turned toward her immediately. There was a question in his eyes.‎

‎Clara met his gaze without hesitation. Something unspoken passed between them in that moment, a silent understanding of the arrangement they had just set into motion.

‎"Do not misunderstand," she added quietly. "This arrangement protects both of us."

‎‎Jeffery's smile widened slightly. "And if something goes wrong?" he murmured.

‎Clara's voice dropped to a whisper.‎‎ "Then we both lose."

‎Before the conversation could continue, the boardroom door opened again.

‎An assistant stepped inside, clearly nervous." Mr. Rothwell... your sister is here."

‎Jeffery frowned slightly. What does Sophia want now?"

As if summoned by the question, Sophia Rothwell walked into the room without waiting for permission.

‎She was younger than Jeffery but carried herself with the same confidence. Her sharp eyes moved quickly around the boardroom, taking in the stunned directors and the tension lingering in the air.

‎"Well," she said dryly, "this looks interesting."

‎Her gaze settled on Clara.‎ Jeffery exhaled slowly. "Sophia."

‎Sophia crossed the room with casual curiosity. "I heard there was a board meeting today," she said. "I thought I'd stop by and see the chaos for myself."

‎Sophia's reputation for speaking her mind was well known throughout the company. She had never cared much for corporate politics.

‎Jeffery gestured toward Clara.

‎"Sophia, this is Clara. My fiancee."

‎Sophia blinked once. Then her eyebrows shot upward.‎ "Fiancee?" she repeated.

‎Her eyes moved between them, clearly amused.‎ "Well, that's unexpected.
