He Folded for a Fraud Chapter 1

My dad never got over his first love, so he traded me for her daughter, Irene.

I spent twenty years like that before they finally took me back and named me the real heiress.

So when it was time to pick a husband, I didn't care about anything else. I just wanted someone with a clean past.

Like Shane Terrell.

Detective captain. Cold, intimidating, and known for ignoring women—yet when he confessed, his ears went red.

"Lana Laurent, you're my first. You have to take responsibility for me."

I believed him. Thought I'd found the one.

Then Irene came back.

I stood in our house and watched Shane hold her, crying.

"Why'd you make me lie to her? Why'd you make me marry her? You're the one I loved first!"

Lana's POV

Shane's last shout slammed through my head.

It didn't hurt.

Just a sharp buzz—high and piercing—spinning the room until I dropped.

My phone kept vibrating on the table. I stared, then swiped.

Even my voice came out broken. "Mom?"

A pause. Then her long sigh.

"Lana, you saw it, didn't you?"

I froze.

My grip tightened on the phone, knuckles going white. "You... knew?"

She laughed, low and mocking, like it was nothing. "Yeah. If you didn't see it yourself, you'd never let go. Your father made you suffer twenty years for that woman. And Shane? He's been acting this whole time for Irene. Your father, Shane—still not enough to wake you up? Love's the least important thing."

From the master bedroom upstairs, the sounds slipped through the door—cheap, ugly proof of every word.

I choked, tears spilling. Still asked, like a kid, "Then what matters, Mom?"

"Money." Her voice was cold. Flat. "Come back to the Laurent estate. I've handled everything. Pack up. Your flight's in a week—you're going to Wharton for finance. Spot's secured. Recommendations too.

"Don't stay here playing a detective captain's trad wife. That's beneath you. Lana, feelings flip fast. Real money doesn't."

I went quiet.

Then I glanced at the mirror in the corner.

Bloodshot eyes. Messy hair. Faint red marks on my neck from last night.

Every detail screamed stupid. Pathetic.

Right in the center of the mirror—a gold wedding decal with our initials.

Shane and I were supposed to get married.

He lied to me.

He cheated on me.

Right now, he was upstairs, tangled with another woman.

I laughed—at myself.

I grabbed the edge of the decal.

Rip—

It peeled off and hit the floor. I stepped over it.

Then I turned and walked out, phone to my ear.

"Fine. But I'm in so much pain. I won't be satisfied unless they feel it too."

My mom let out a low chuckle. "Then show me."

I lay dying on a hospital gurney, my internal organs crushed from shielding my sister during the crash. Yet, my parents were down the hall, cooing over Estrella' s minor scratches while ignoring my fading pulse. "She' s faking it for attention," my father spat. "She' ll regret this stunt when she gets home." When the nurse frantically told them I was gone, my mother didn't shed a tear. She laughed. "Nice try," she sneered at the nurse. "Tell Carolina to stop playing dead. It' s pathetic." My spirit watched helplessly as they turned my funeral into a performance, painting me as the "difficult" child who finally ruined their lives. I thought my suffering was over, but then a violent pull dragged me back from the void. I opened my eyes in a stranger's body-Claire Tillman, a billionaire heiress betrayed by her fiancé. Now armed with a new face and unlimited resources, I realized I had a second chance. Spirit qi is scarce and unstable, making cultivation far less effective than elsewhere. Instead, the people here rely on advanced technology - weapons and explosives that can injure or even defeat those with great physical strength. His companions are lost somewhere across this dangerous land. The Billionaire's Medicine: His Silent Obsession Novel Cover
8.7
My stepmother sold me like a piece of inventory to a man known for breaking people just to plug the financial crater my father left behind. I was delivered to the Morton estate in the middle of a freezing storm, stripped of my phone, and told that if I didn't make myself useful, my senile grandfather would be evicted from his care facility by noon. The master of the house, Adonis Morton IV, was a monster living in a silent mausoleum, driven to the brink of madness by a sensory condition that turned every sound into a physical assault. When I was forced into his suite to serve him, he didn't see a human being; he saw a source of agony. In a fit of animalistic rage, he pinned me to the wall and nearly strangled me to death just for the sound of a shattering teacup. I only survived by using my grandfather’s secret herbal blends and pressure-point therapy to force his overactive nervous system into a drugged sleep. But saving him was my greatest mistake. Instead of letting me go, Adonis moved me into a guest suite connected to his own bedroom by a hidden door. He didn't just want me as a servant; he needed me as a human white-noise machine to drown out the demons in his head. The nightmare deepened when he took the promissory note that defined my freedom and tore it into confetti. By destroying the debt, he destroyed my exit strategy. He replaced my maid’s uniform with a silver silk dress that clung to my skin but did nothing to hide the dark, ugly bruises his fingers had left on my neck. He branded me as his "primary care associate," a title that was nothing more than a gilded cage. I felt a sickening sense of injustice as he forced me to sign a contract that banned me from contacting other men and required me to sleep wherever he slept. He looked at me with a possessive heat, calling me his "medication" rather than a woman. My family had sold my body, but Adonis Morton was intent on owning my very presence, using my grandfather’s medical bills as a leash to keep me within twenty feet of him at all times. Standing in a neglected greenhouse with mud staining my expensive silk, I realized I was no longer a victim waiting for rescue. If I was going to be his medication, I would learn how to be his cure—or his undoing. I began clearing the weeds with a cold, calculated frenzy, determined to turn this prison into my laboratory. He thinks he has trapped a helpless girl, but I am going to pry open the cracks in his stone walls until his entire world comes crashing down.

I wanted to see if he loved the girl, or just the crown. He failed spectacularly tonight. His mistress, Jaden, deliberately knocked a tray of drinks onto me during the dinner rush. The liquid wasn't alcohol. It was concentrated silver. My flesh hissed and bubbled as the poison ate through my skin, blocking any ability to heal. I fell to the floor, clutching my melting hand, while Jaden faked tears and claimed I attacked her. When Connor finally answered the video call, he saw my mangled hand. He smelled the burning flesh. He knew it was silver. But he didn't help me. He looked at his watch, annoyed that I was interrupting his business meeting with investors. "Apologize to Jaden," he ordered, using his Alpha Command to crush me into submission. "On your knees. Now." The pain was blinding, but the betrayal cut deeper. He was forcing his Fated Mate to bow to the woman who tried to maim her. My knees bent under the pressure, but my Royal blood refused to break. I looked straight into the camera lens. "No," I whispered. I reached into my apron, bypassing the notepad, and pulled out a black satellite phone I hadn't touched in years. "Code Black," I said to the King on the other end. "Send the Guard." Connor thought he was disciplining a waitress. He didn't know he just declared war on the Royal Family.
