Rejected by Alpha Mate Chapter 1

The summons came while I was organizing training schedules for the pack warriors. A formal mind-link from Alexander—not the warm, intimate connection we usually shared, but something colder, more official.

*Lily, come to the inner chamber immediately.*

I felt my wolf, Emma, stir uneasily within me. *Something's wrong*, she whined.

*It's fine*, I assured her, though my hands trembled slightly as I set down my pen. *He's probably just stressed about the border negotiations.*

As I hurried through the sprawling halls of the Silver Moon Pack house, I smoothed down my simple blue dress—the one Alexander once said brought out my eyes. Six years I'd been by his side, acting as his Luna in all but official marking. Six years of building my life around him, around us.

The massive oak doors to the inner chamber loomed before me. I knocked softly, then entered when I heard his deep voice command, "Enter."

Alexander stood by the window, his broad shoulders silhouetted against the afternoon light. He didn't turn when I entered, and the absence of his usual smile sent a chill down my spine.

"You wanted to see me?" I asked, my voice small in the cavernous room.

When he finally turned, his handsome face was a mask of Alpha authority. Standing beside him was Madison Wright, the newcomer who'd joined our pack only three months ago. Her auburn hair gleamed in the sunlight, her perfect lips curved in what might have been a sympathetic smile if not for the triumph glittering in her eyes.

"Lily," Alexander's voice carried that unmistakable Alpha tone that made my wolf instinctively lower her head. "I've made a decision regarding pack training."

I nodded, waiting. I'd been Head of Pack Training for four years, building our program from scattered exercises into a cohesive system that had strengthened our warriors considerably.

"I'm appointing Madison as the new Head of Training, effective immediately."

The words hit me like a physical blow. Emma howled in confusion within me.

"I... I don't understand," I managed, my voice barely a whisper. "Have I done something wrong?"

"This isn't about your performance," Alexander said dismissively. "It's about what's best for the pack. Madison has experience from her former territory that will benefit us."

Madison stepped forward, her expensive perfume enveloping me. "I'm so honored by the Alpha's trust," she said, her voice honey-sweet. "And I hope I can count on your support during the transition, Lily."

My chest tightened as I struggled to breathe normally. "Of course," I said automatically, years of pack protocol taking over. "Whatever the Alpha decides."

Alexander nodded, already turning back to the window. "That will be all."

Dismissed. Just like that.

I spent the rest of the day in a fog, mechanically transferring my training notes to Madison, ignoring the pitying glances from pack members who'd witnessed my fall from grace.

That night, alone in the small room I'd been given when I first arrived—not the Alpha's quarters where I spent most nights—I finally let my tears fall.

*Something's not right*, Emma insisted. *He wouldn't do this to us without reason.*

Summoning my courage, I opened our mind-link. *Alexander?*

There was a pause, longer than usual, before his voice filled my head. *What is it, Lily?*

*I don't understand what happened today*, I admitted, my mental voice trembling. *Why Madison? Why now?*

His response came with a purring quality that usually soothed me. *It's all part of the plan, little wolf. I'm testing Madison's loyalty. Besides, you need to learn pack politics if you're going to be my Luna someday.*

Emma whined, unconvinced. *But why humiliate us publicly?*

*Don't be dramatic*, he replied, an edge of impatience creeping into his tone. *It's a simple reassignment. Trust me, Lily. Have I ever let you down?*

I pushed aside Emma's continued unease. *No, never.*

*Then trust me now. Get some rest.*

The mind-link closed abruptly, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

Three days later, the pack gathered in the great hall for the monthly assembly. I stood at the edge of the crowd, dressed in the black dress I'd worn to my father's funeral years ago—the only formal attire I owned that I hadn't worn as Alexander's unofficial Luna.

Alexander commanded the room from the raised platform, resplendent in his custom-tailored suit. "Today," he announced, "we celebrate Madison Wright's contributions to our pack."

Madison stepped forward, radiant in a designer dress I could never afford on my pack allowance. The crowd murmured appreciatively as Alexander presented her with a gleaming silver bracelet, intricately engraved with the Silver Moon Pack symbol.

"A token of the pack's appreciation," he declared.

My fingers instinctively went to the faded leather band on my wrist—Alexander's first gift to me, a simple thing he'd made himself when we were newly bonded. I'd treasured it above any jewel.

As Madison accepted the bracelet with a dazzling smile, her eyes found mine across the room. The flash of triumph in them was unmistakable.

Emma growled deep within me. *He's never given us anything like that.*

*It's just pack politics*, I repeated to myself, clinging to Alexander's explanation. But as I watched him place his hand on the small of Madison's back, guiding her through the admiring crowd, the hollow feeling in my chest expanded until I could barely breathe.

Something was changing in the Silver Moon Pack. And for the first time in six years, I wasn't sure where I fit anymore.
