The Blueprints He Kept Chapter 1

Nigel Ainsworth, my ex-husband, had just been appointed my new boss. Staring at his handsome, stone-cold face, the memory of his betrayal from three years ago tightened around my heart like a vise. The hands that once set my body on fire now signed off on surgical directives, and the thought made my stomach clench. I let my voice drip with ice. "Dr. Ainsworth, if you'd shown this much backbone three years ago, we might not be in this position." Without a second glance, I spun on my heel and strode out of the suffocating office, my heels echoing sharply on the polished floor.

The moment I stepped out of the office, a few nurses immediately swarmed me.

"Dr. Barnes, do you know the new Director of Surgery?"

"No," I said, my voice clipped. I just wanted the topic to die.

"Oh my god, Jules, that Dr. Ainsworth is so young! I heard he's a Hopkins grad... and apparently, he's single."

That comment sent a ripple of excitement through the nurses' station. A few of the more gossip-prone nurses began to chatter, the sound grating on my last nerve.

"Dream on," I shattered their fantasy. "He's been married. And divorced."

I ignored their stunned silence, grabbed my handbag, and prepared to leave for the day.

"How do you know so much about him?" a young nurse persisted, unwilling to let it go.

A bitter laugh escaped me. How could I not know? I was the ex-wife he'd abandoned.

I didn't bother to explain, heading straight for the elevator. The moment the doors slid shut, the knot in my shoulders began to loosen. I had told myself a thousand times not to let the past define me, but seeing Nigel Ainsworth again, as my superior, my guarded heart couldn't help but throb with a familiar ache.

We had been married for five years.

For our fifth anniversary, I'd planned every detail of the hospital's charity gala, eager to celebrate with him. Instead, he was in the hospital's glass conservatory, holding Chloe Sinclair—my best friend. The photo went viral on the hospital's internal forum. Overnight, they became the Seattle medical community's new power couple.

The saccharine congratulations, that single, viral photo—none of it had anything to do with me. I hid in an empty locker room and dialed his number.

"Nigel, I want a divorce."

There was a beat of silence, then his voice, tight with anger, "Jules, what kind of game are you playing?"

"I'm sending the papers to your email," I said, and hung up.

When I got home, the flames in the fireplace danced quietly. I pulled a thick roll of blueprints from a desk drawer. They were the designs for the lakeside cabin we had dreamed of. I once believed it would be our forever home, but now, poring over the drawings, a painful irony struck me. From choosing the site to drafting the plans, through every single revision, the only handwriting was mine. This "shared dream" had been my solo project from the very beginning.

He was never really part of it.

I stared blankly at the stack of blueprints that held all my love and hope, and then, one by one, I fed them to the fire. The crisp blue pages curled, blackened, and turned to ash, just like the future between us that had never even begun.

I was smoothing the red silk of my dress over a baby bump only I knew existed, preparing to tell my husband, the ruthless King of Chicago, that he was finally going to be a father. But before I could share the news, the ballroom fell silent. A woman walked in wearing a gold dress that was barely legal. It was Serena, the woman from the photos I had received just hours ago. She walked right up to us and handed Michael a silver tie clip. "You left this in the suite, Michael," she purred in front of the entire city's elite. When I demanded she leave, she smirked and threw her glass of red wine all over me. The liquid soaked into my dress, looking like a gunshot wound right over my womb. I waited for Michael to defend me. To throw her out. Instead, he looked at the crowd, terrified of a scandal. "Don't make a scene, Liv," he hissed, his eyes cold. "Go upstairs and change. I'll handle this." He turned his back on me and walked away with his mistress, leaving me dripping in crimson and humiliation. My mother found me sobbing in the bedroom and slapped me sober. "Tears are for the weak," she said. "Tonight, Michael Thorne loses everything." We froze his assets. We destroyed his reputation. But that wasn't enough. I wanted to break his soul. I looked down at my stomach. I would protect this child, but his father would never know he existed. "Tell him I lost the baby," I whispered to the butler, my voice trembling with rage. "Tell him the stress caused a miscarriage. Tell him he killed his heir." Tonight, the golden cage opens. And Michael Thorne is about to find out that even a canary has claws.

After fifteen years of marriage and a brutal battle with infertility, I finally saw two pink lines on a pregnancy test. This baby was my victory, the heir that would finally secure my place as the wife of mob capo Marco Vitiello. I planned to announce it at his mother's party, a triumph over the matriarch who saw me as nothing but a barren field. But before I could celebrate, my friend sent me a video. The headline read: "MOB CAPO MARCO VITIELLO'S PASSIONATE NIGHTCLUB KISS!" It was him, my husband, devouring a woman who looked like a younger, fresher version of me. Hours later, Marco stumbled home, drunk and reeking of another woman's perfume. He complained about his mother begging him for an heir, completely unaware of the secret I held. Then my phone lit up with a text from an unknown number. "Your husband slept with my girl. We need to talk." It was signed by Dante Moretti, the ruthless Don of our rival family. The meeting with Dante was a nightmare. He showed me another video. This time, I heard my husband's voice, telling the other woman, "I love you. Elara... that's just business." My fifteen years of loyalty, of building his empire, of taking a bullet for him—all dismissed as "just business." Dante didn't just reveal the affair; he showed me proof that Marco was already stealing our shared assets to build a new life with his mistress. Then, he made me an offer. "Divorce him," he said, his eyes cold and calculating. "Join me. We'll build an empire together and destroy him."
