The Groom She Doesn’t Remember Chapter 1

My fiancée, Rachel Evans, was in a car accident before our wedding and had just woken up when I rushed over to the hospital.

The bridesmaids surrounded her. "Rachel, you're finally awake! Your fiancé, Nicholas Shaw, was so worried when he heard you were in a car accident that he cried!" said one of them. "Now the wedding will have to be postponed."

"Who's Nicholas Shaw?" Rachel asked with a frown. "Where's my boyfriend? Where's Jordan?"

A hush fell in the ward as soon as those words fell. My face was pale as I stood in the doorway, for I knew very well who she was referring to.

She was talking about Jordan Baxter, her first love.

Amnesia

Rachel had lost her memory. The attending physician said she suffered a blood clot in her head as a result of the head injury. Although she wasn't in a life-threatening condition, it had caused her to suffer amnesia.

After the doctor left, Rachel and I were the only ones left in the ward.

She looked at me as though I were a stranger as she said, "Mr. Shaw, our marriage is merely an alliance between our families. Considering what has happened, you must know now that we're not right for each other."

'What nonsense! Although our marriage was a marriage of convenience, we still dated for three years.' I snorted inwardly. 'Plus, she had practically clung to me for the past three years. Our mutual friends have even complained that we were too wrapped up with each other!

'Yet, she was now telling me that we aren't right for each other?'

"Rachel, are you serious? Your amnesia is only temporary. What if you regain your memories one day, and—"

"I will never marry you even if I regain my memories!" she interrupted me impatiently. "Let's break off the engagement!"

I felt my heart clench at the cool look in her eyes, and a sense of helplessness washed over me.

"Rachel, this is not something I can decide by myself. If you insist on breaking off the engagement, have your parents come and talk to mine in person!"

She didn't spare me a look as she muttered impatiently, "Don't worry. They will agree. You can leave now."

I clenched my fists. I was about to leave when the door slid open, and a figure rushed in.

"Rachel!"

The person barging in was none other than Jordan Baxter. He was dressed in a well-tailored suit. He even shoulder-checked me in his haste to get to Rachel.

I lost my balance, causing my lower back to slam against the headboard with a loud thud. I didn't even need to get it checked out to know that it was bruised.

"Rachel, are you all right?" Jordan asked, his voice laced with concern.

Rachel reached out to hold his hand. "I'm fine. Sorry for making you worry."

Jordan sniffled, his eyes teary as he took her hand, saying, "I was so scared. I came as soon as I got the news!"

"Don't worry. I'm fine."

I felt a wave of nausea as I watched the two of them interact. I couldn't help but sneer at them.

When Rachel heard that, she looked up at me. The disgust in her eyes made me raise an eyebrow.

She probably forgot that her eyes used to be full of affection for me.

Only then did Jordan notice me and apologize belatedly, "Mr. Shaw, you're here too. I'm sorry. I was just too worried about Rachel. You're not mad at me, right?"

"I accept your apology. After all, it was you who bumped into me," I replied dryly.

The look on Jordan's face was so aggrieved that anyone who didn't know better would think I had bullied him.

Sure enough, Rachel became displeased. She squeezed Jordan's hand in affection as she reprimanded me, "He didn't mean it. Mr. Shaw, why are you being so aggressive?!"

My heart sank. I couldn't believe the woman who once became obsessively distressed whenever I got the slightest scratch would berate me so harshly.

"Rachel, you have amnesia, not dementia! You know what? Forget it. Let's settle this as soon as possible. I hope you'll give me an answer within three days."

I turned around and left without caring about their reactions.

After I left, I sought out the attending physician and confirmed that Rachel really wasn't faking her amnesia.

Her parents hadn't consented to the surgery after learning that it would be a risky procedure due to the blood clot in her brain. Hence, it was all up to her to regain her memories on her own.

It seemed that my relationship with Rachel had run its course.

How ironic! All it took was an accident for her to forget all about me.

Still, it wasn't exactly a big deal. After all, I was Nicholas Shaw. Besides, people like us got married to secure alliances between families anyway.

Therefore, there were plenty of other heiresses who would be willing to marry me even after Rachel called off our engagement.

So, I really shouldn't waste my energy on this.

However, I couldn't deny that her indifference stung.

I found it difficult to swallow that I was the only one who remembered the memories we made after spending so much time together for the past three years. I felt so alone.

She hugged me as we set off fireworks by the river, declaring confidently, "Nicholas, I'm going to have a citywide fireworks event on our wedding day!" That conversation had happened just three days ago.
